Tokoroa High Princpal a Cook Islander

Tokoroa, often referred to as the “Heart of the Timberlands” has a long history of success, achievements and its own stories as far as the local Cook Islands community goes but for one person, his recent achievement has brought together feelings of personal as well as community pride and success.
For William Ford, (often known as Willie) his appointment as Principal of Tokoroa High School capitulates one success after another but more importantly, for the Cook Islands community of Tokoroa who see his appointment as an absolute pinnacle and role model for many of the young students who attend Tokoroa High School, his appointment is unbeatable and something they are very proud of.
William is named after his American great grandfather and grandfather. His Cook Islands links are from his mother who is from Aitutaki and his father from Penrhyn. His cultural diversity includes links to Ngati Maniapoto, United States, Canada, England and Scotland.
Being appointed Principal has always been a life time dream and especially in a place where he grew up and has fond memories of his childhood development. Both his parents moved to Tokoroa during the late 50’s in search of a better life where his father obtained work as a fitter and turner at the Kinleith Mills owned by New Zealand Forest Products. The family became actively involved in the local Cook Islands church and sporting community hence his ongoing interest in sports.
Willliam has had an illustrious career primarily in the sports arena. Apart from being an excellent teacher, he has also been a lecturer for the NZ Rugby Football League Academy and has often been seen as part of the NZ Kiwi Rugby League Team Coaching squad during many national and international games.
He is also an outstanding and highly qualified educator having completed a Masters degree in Business Management, post graduate diplomas in coaching and teaching as well as a university diploma in sports studies. In recognition of his brilliant teaching career, William was nominated in 2007 by his community for the Excellence in Teaching Awards.
Because of his people related skills and his commitment to do well, most school teams that have served under his tutorage have reached national competition levels. William is known for giving more than 100% and expects nothing less from those he teaches.
He is married to Oriade (nee Joseph clan from Araura) and they have 4 children and 3 grandchildren. He has taught at Tokoroa High, Forest View and Aorere College. He was also a former member of the Board of Trustees of Tokoroa High School and continues to share his busy schedule with family and friends as well commit to numerous community activities involving our Cook Islands people.
His appointment is another milestone to celebrate success amongst our Cook Islands people in NZ as he carries the flag in areas not often thought possible by our people. The Herald extends its congratulations to William and his family and look forward to hearing of more success stories in the near future.
