Cyclone Nisha may hit Rarotonga
Blue Alert issued-prepare now
As of 2am Wednesday morning, the tropical depression over Samoa was upgraded to tropical cyclone Nisha with winds at its centre of 35knots or 50km/h and gusting to 40knots or 70km/h. The cyclone is moving in a South Easterly direction at 10knots or 20km/h and currently it is located to the South East of Samoa. There is a strong possibility based on its projected path that this cyclone may hit Rarotonga directly. However, at this stage, no warnings have been issued for the Cook Islands but the public is advised of a Blue Alert being in place. This means the public is asked to prepare and expect warnings for the Southern Cook Islands in the next 24 hours. The next weather update will be announced at around 2pm Wednesday afternoon and it is a wise time to have the new phone book that includes the cyclone tracking map and the public is also advised to listen in on further updates and update your own tracking map. The Herald has placed a tracking map on page 24.
