TCI downward pricing trends
Telecom Cook Islands management are mystified about recent claims of high charges when in fact their rates for international calls, broadband internet and mobile phone call rates have fallen dramatically in recent years.
TCI chief executive, Jules Maher said such incorrect reports are not only factually wrong but could also affect confidence in the economy. Maher said he was impressed by the positive news from Te Aponga Uira last week which is the kind of positive news that TCI endorses.
The company has put together impressive statistics to back up their claims which were inspired in part, by the TAU announcement as much as to set the record straight. The graphs clearly demonstrate the downward trend in pricing for their services while maintaining a modest growth in revenue despite rises in costs.
Despite the uncertainty of government’s plans relating to deregulation of the industry, TCI is not resting on their laurels and already have made plans for the future.
Exciting developments are the possible hookup with O3B satellite network which is backed by Google and HSBC which if it comes to fruition, will mean faster connections at a lower price. O3B networks would provide more speed and capacity to the customer who might be stimulated to find creative ways to use the extra capacity and capabilities than is currently the case.
Their satellites orbit earth at lower altitudes than those used to beam TV signals to homes, they work better for Internet access where latency - the amount of time it takes for bits of information to travel from source to destination - is an issue.
According to an internet search, O3B is an acronym for ‘other 3 billion’ and is a satellite network which intends to offer fibre performance over satellite to parts of the world where it is not commercially viable or practical to deploy a fibre network. According to an internet search, the satellites would be constructed by Thales Alenia Space and should be operational by the end of 2010.
If the service is taken up, and TCI are weighing up their options very carefully, then the new service would revolutionize services to all clients including the outer islands
