Help is on the way to Aitutaki
More supplies were flown to Aitutaki on Tuesday morning. 500 kilograms of cargo was airlifted on the Hercules courtesy of the New Zealand government.
The cargo was quite bulky including a power generator, cables, a water tank and some bunk beds but owing to the urgency of the need in Aitutaki, the Hercules would be used in the meantime. The bunks were from the Pacific Mini Games and were originally to have been sold to the public but the government decided it would be better to give the beds to the homeless families in Aitutaki.
Christina Newport from the NZ High Commission accompanied by Squadorn leader, Tauvae Tamariki was also there to ensure that everything was in order ready for loading on to the Hercules. Newport expressed some uncertainty as to whether the water tank would fit on the Hercules but they would try.
Anthony Brown from Agriculture said the Ministry had sent 1000 packages of seeds so the farmers in Aitutaki could start their replanting programme as soon as possible. Cook Islands Red Cross also had items ready to be sent to Aitutaki where their relief team is already on the ground. The items arrived from overseas on Tuesday morning.
