New PTA committee elected at Tereora

Tereora College held their Annual General Meeting on 10 March to elect their 2010 office bearers. They are Tere Taio (chairman), Emile Kairua and Barbara Ruaporo (vice chairpersons), Johanna Simiona (treasurer).
Chairman, Tere Taio said the PTA has a lot of work ahead of them including having to find another one and half classrooms for the College which has increased their student enrolments in 2010 which is now at 650 (up from 630.in 2009).
One of the factors is the increased student demand to join the Information Technology (computer classes) and there not enough computers available to cater for classes of 30 at a time. There is also the need for an air conditioned classroom to prevent damage to the electronic equipment from humidity and so on. Budgetary constraints are such that the PTA will probably have to raise much of the money to purchase the computers which will be sourced second hand from New Zealand. Taio said that all the servicing for the school computers are now carried out by one of the IT teachers at the College.
Another factor adding to the pressure is that the College has added performing arts as a subject and the students require their own classroom for their activities. The pressure on space is the main reason that the classes run by Kevin Iro and his group had to relocate to Nikao Primary School.
Taio said the Cook Islands Investment Corporation (CIIC) has suggested the possibility of using the buildings that the Chinese workers used when constructing the multi purpose stadium used from the WYNC and for the Pacific Mini Games.
Committee members are: Teremoana Manavaroa, Keri Herman, Melinda Smith, Maine Beniamina, Emily Fallon, Marie Priest, Arona Ngari, Annie Fisher, Mona Matangaro, Ria and Rosa Emile.
