Broadcaster Elma Maua passes away
The veteran Cook Island broadcaster Elma Maua passed away yesterday in Wellington at the age of 62 after a long illness that forced her to retire as a sports editor of Radio NZ International earlier this year. Elma was well known in the Cook Islands and was one of NZ’s first Pacific Island journalists and worked for Radio NZ and Niu FM. In 1999 Elma returned to Rarotonga where she worked at the Prime Minister’s Office then onto the Ministry of Transport before returning to New Zealand.
Over the many years, Elma has worked closely with Radio CI and assisted the Pitt Media Group staff cover many events including the 1999, 2004 and 2006 general elections and the Pacific Mini Games where she assisted with the netball commentary. Elma will be sadly missed by all media organizations around the region and her friends here at the Pitt Media Group.
