Artists meeting demand
The Art Shack is based at the Punanga Nui market and is operated by Kay George who also runs the Art Studio in Arorangi and Ani O’Neil two prominent Cook Islands female artists. The Herald spoke with Kay on Saturday. According to Kay it was due to demand that they opened the hut.
“A lot of people were asking if we had an outlet at the popular market and just by chance we had one offered to us,” Kay said.
“So here we are, every Saturday you will find us here at the market.”
The hut which not only serves as an outlet for the women’s work is also an outlet for other local artists to sell their work. The original work on offer is extremely well priced and affordable considering they are one off. Colorful cushion covers designed by Kay and T Shirts by Ani are just an example of what is offer for sale. Kay has recently increased her range of clothing and she has developed a collection of original print garments ranging from hand painted T Shirts to skirts and dresses all in her unique style. Ani who is known for her crochet skills is equally talented and has produced a range of products that she has handmade, which its self is a rarity today with her striking colorful beanie hats and flowers proving popular.
