Aitutaki Recovery Update

The availability of building materials on Aitutaki saw the return of Project Manager Mr Atatoa Herman and his team to the island from Wednesday last week. They will spend the next two weeks completing minor works of a finishing nature on Categories 1 and 2 houses. The next sailing of Southern Express Voy 1000 this week will have the rest of the building materials on the island to complete the work. This is expected to be completed fully, including the 5 homes that were not done due to shortage of materials.
The 2 bedroom prototype house will also be finished before work on any of the other Categories 3 & 4 houses commence.
NZAID has recruited a consultant to assist the Recovery Committee and MOIP complete a Project Implementation Document (PID) which, this week, is being presented to NZAID in Wellington for approval. The PID includes, amongst other project details:
• Project management structure, including a Clerk of Works recruited and paid by NZAID
• Financial arrangements
• Procurement arrangements of materials
• Reconstruction timelines
If special measures proposed for the reconstruction work on Categories 3 & 4 houses are accepted by NZAID & CI Government, actual work on these two categories could begin by the end of this (May) month.
Meanwhile, Mayor Tai Herman has encouraged Category 3 and 4 homeowners to commence
preparatory work to their properties in readiness for the Project Team commencing reconstruction work.
Other Recovery Projects
Other recover projects include repairs to the primary schools and Araura College, Replacement of school resources, repairs to the Aitutaki Hospital, Water gallery Upgrades and Disaster risk
management have all received approval for funding from NZAID whilst UNDP has approved some funding for Cash-for-work economic related activity on Aitutaki.
Implementing agencies have been requested to finalise project documents to enable these approved projects to move towards actual implementation within the next month or two.
