Fundraising for Oceania Tournament

Members of the local Taekwon Do Club are fundraising to attend the Oceania Tournament being held in Wellington, New Zealand in the first week of July. They are planning to take nine students over for the event.
Poko Heather, Manager of the upcoming trip, told the Herald that the decision to attend the Tournament in Wellington was made when they came back from their recent trip to New Zealand.
“It was the first time we had gone on a trip and there were 36 of us. The purpose of that trip was to give the students exposure to the sport and for their grading and also for them to compete.”
She also said that the experience gained was invaluable. It made them realise that they were on par if not better than their competitors from overseas.
“It opened our eyes and we saw just how good our students are. Too often because we are from a little island we underestimate ourselves and abilities.”
She said that when they returned from their recent successful trip they had a meeting and decided to commit themselves to raising the funds required to attend the Oceania Tournament. Poko said that being affiliated with the Counties Manukau Taekwon Do is a big help as the Maunkau club assists them when they are in New Zealand.
“We piggy back with them and can’t thank them enough for how they support our group from the Cook Islands,” Poko said.
The local group needs to raise thirteen thousand for their July trip and have started by holding car washes and selling plates of bbq food on Saturday mornings in Avarua.
Avarua Bakery had kindly sponsored the bread for their bbq on Saturday and other sponsors are waiting on the sidelines to assist the group.
Poko also mentioned that they are open to working bees and odd jobs and anyone who is interested in assisting them or in hiring the group can contact her on cell ph 50387.
