HERALD WEEKLY ISSUE 513: 26 May 2010

Dialogue between the Demo factions now the priority-Sir Terepai

Discussions are due to start thursday evening between committees made up of officials from the Democratic Party faction, lead by Assistant President Sean Willis, which plans to hold a conference on 31 May and the faction rallied behind Democratic Party Leader and former DPM Sir Terepai Maoate.
The Herald understands each committee will have three members. No caucus members would be involved on the committees set up to dialogue, only party officials.
Sir Terepai announced this on Tuesday when speaking with the Herald. He said that when he made a statement on radio about two weeks ago, he made particular mention of the tasks ahead as leader to find ways and means of rebuilding the Democratic Party, to see how best to mould the party to go into the next election. As a result of that, the Deputy PM Robert Wig,ore asked for a meeting with with him and Sean Willis. They met at Sir Terepai’s home last Friday.
It was brief meeting said Sir Terepai. The agenda was straight forward, both Wigmore and Willis asked for dialogue to start between the two groups. Sir Terepai said he encouraged dialogue and suggested forming a small team to start the dialogue with the hope of bringing the two factions together.
He said the executives got together at 5pm last Friday. They idiscussed the outcome of the meeting with Wigmore an Willis and agreed to form a team and to start dialoguing this week. As far as he is aware, this is being prepared and some arrangement has to start with communications and the dialogue should be ongoing ASAP.
Sir Terepai said dialogue was seen as the priority not the proposed conference or the proposed injunction. Referring to the injunction by the executive of the Democratic Party against the use of the name Sir Terepai said the preparation for this injunction had been going on for sometime and the purpose of it was simply that no one is allowed to use the name besides the party. However dialogue has now been discussed and agreed upon. Sir Terepai said he is hoping that will take place and the intention is clear.
