Nooroa Teina to stand as an Independent in Tupapa Maraerenga

In a surprise announcement on Tuesday morning long time Cook Islands Party (CIP) stalwart Nooroa Teina told the Herald he intends to stand as an Independent for parliament in Tupapa Maraerenga.
It’s a move that will certainly provide voters in that electorate with an alternative to the Democratic Party’s sitting member John Tangi and the CIP’s candidate.
Teina has been involved in politics within the electorate since he was young, following his mother who was part of former MP and Cabinet Minister CIP’s Papa Dan Kamana’s political machine. He took over from his mother on Papa Dan’s committee in 1985 and has been involved with the CIP’s candidates since then.
Teina is the former President of the CIP’s Tupapa Maraerenga Committee and is standing as he feels he has the support of many CIP and Democratic Party supporters.
Teina was in Aitutaki at the time the CIP conducted the run off voting. Teina has several houses there which were damaged in Cyclone Pat.
He plans to call a meeting Thursday week to set up his Committee for the coming campaign.
