HERALD WEEKLY ISSUE 520: 14 July 2010

Licences may be issued

Government is considering calling for expressions of interest from those wishing to apply for exploratory licences in relation to the manganese nodule resource. The Herald understands government is keen to learn more about the nature of the resource in relation to density, mineral composition and value. The area being considered for exploratory licences is the Manihiki plateau. The Canadian company Endeavour was the last to express an interest in obtaining an exploratory licence but also sought exclusive rights. That was prior to legislation being promulgated by government.
