Parliament may only sit for one day
When Parliament meets on Thursday 29 July for the Budget to be tabled, it is likely parliament may only sit for one day before being adjourned.
In Cabinet on Tuesday the Prime Minister Hon Jim Marurai agreed to call parliament on Thursday 20 July to table the Budget. He has notified the Queen’s Representative to summon parliament.
Finance Minister Hon Wilkie Rasmussen told the Herald on Tuesday evening he hopes to speak on the Budget but hinted parliament may sit for that day and then adjourn. This raises speculation about the dissolving of parliament for the general election but it is known that the PM prefers parliament to go the full term to 26 September.
