Saving lives, changing minds – a school holiday program

The Cook Islands Red Cross will be running a school holiday program for children 9 – 13 years old. This idea came about from seeing children with little to do or working parents having difficulty finding minders for their children. Although we cannot cater for all the children in Rarotonga we would like to at least, play a small part in the lives of our young children at this time. The International Red Cross’ mission statement from 2010 till 2020 is ‘saving lives, changing minds. With the many changes taking place in the world today our way of thinking also has to change in order to survive the disasters. Everyone young and old has to play their part in building a resilient community. Therefore this program will be a good induction for the young children into climate change, disaster preparedness, emerging diseases, healthy lifestyle and of course becoming a Junior Red Cross member. The program will run from the 2-6 August at the Ngatangiia/Matavera Clubhouse in Muri from 8 .00 am – 4.30 pm everyday except Wednesday being a public holiday. There is a minimal charge of $5 per child to assist with costs and it will be a fun but educational program. All children are to provide their own morning tea, lunch and afternoon snack everyday. On Friday the children will prepare a umu and at 4.00 pm will be a showcase of what they have learnt from the program. There are only 40 places and applications will close 30th July 2010. Pick up an application form from our office opposite Club Raro or give us a call on 22598 or we will email you an application form.
