Aitutaki in short supply of gas
Reports have come in that Aitutaki has run out of gas. This was confirmed by sources in Aitutaki who said the island was virtually empty as of Tuesday and they have no more supplies in stock. This comes hard on the heels of the stress people have had to endure following Cyclone Pat and now this has occurred, what’s next! The other gas supplier in Aitutaki Absolute Gas, has not been selling gas for several months and this has placed additional pressure on the other supplier Super Gas Aitutaki who have had to increase their supply order. Super Gas Rarotonga will be sending relief supplies once a ship is available which is expected to be next week.
Unconfirmed reports have also been forwarded to Rarotonga that the northern group islands are facing a shortage of gas compounded by the lack of regular shipping. An urgent consignment was sent to Manihiki last weekend on the vessel Kwai to help relieve gas shortages there but it is not known what the gas status is on the other northern group islands.
