The wind power alternative
Making the move to alternative, renewable energy is Tama Tuavera who has had a windmill installed on his property in Muri to generate power for his home.
According to Tama, the particular windmill is the first of its kind in the Cook Islands as well as the Pacific.
The windmill was purchased from China, and is capable of producing up to 6 kilowatts per hour or approximately 144kw per day. Standing about 4m tall, it has three blades each approximately 2 m long.
The windmill was installed by Andersons and will power his home in a bid to reduce green house emissions. Excess power generated will be fed into the national grid.
It is located on a hillside where there is a constant wind all year round.
It is able to be brought down for servicing and maintenance and also in the event of a cyclone.
