Tuna Commission calls for reduction in Yellow Fin catch
A Radio New Zealand International bulletin says that the Tuna Commission has called for a 30% cut in Yellow Fin tuna quotas for the Pacific Islands. The bulletin says that the Tuna Commission is meeting in the month of December and this issue will be on the table with over fishing of the Yellow Fin is cited as the main concern and the Commission wants the quotas cut by 10% in 2009, 20% in 2010 and 30% by 2011. The bulletin also quoted Greenpeace which has warned that Yellow Fin tuna stocks are being drastically reduced by over fishing in the Pacific.

Court injunction ignored – environmental disaster in Muri?
At a teleconference held at the High Court on Thursday 2 October to hear an application by Taakoka Island Villas Ltd for an injunction against a landowner called Mrs Tupangaia. The injunction was granted, however, despite this fact, the representatives for Taakoka Island Villas Ltd later discovered that truck loads of sand were removed from beachside land on Friday 3 October.
Health Budget needs work, explainings
In 2007/2008 the increased Budget for Health included $510,000 for capital expenditure and $700,000 in POBOCs for the implementation of the recommendations of the Health Sector Review. However, POBOCs only show $500,000 allocated for the implementation. The remaining $200,000 does not appear anywhere under POBOCs for the Health Review but $200,000 appears under MFEM POBOCs for Health Accounts payable (Drugs bill).

The students at Hospitality, Tourism and Travel Centre were in for a treat when they were invited to attend a luncheon put on by their fellow students. Nine of the ten travel students are from the outer islands so chances are they are getting a taste of the good life they can expect in the hospitality industry.
Cook Islands Community Services of Victoria Incorporated launched in Australia
About 700 people packed the Clayton Town Hall, Clayton Victoria to witness the launch of the Cook Islands Community Services of Victoria Incorporated on Saturday 26th April 2008. About 100 VIP representatives mainly Pastors and their wives from all different denominations within the Cook Islands Community with Local Council Representatives and various Community Group Leaders were part of the VIP’s. The Honourable Member of Parliament Simon Crean was not able to attend the event as he was away in Papua New Guinea but sent his word of congratulations to the organisation.

There will be a brand new all day event to put into our annual calendar with the first ever Takitumu Lagoon Field Day to be held on Saturday 6 June if the Lagoon Management Plan steering committee has their way.

‘Mr Bankruptcy’ seeks new partners
A man who once promised to build a spectacular collection of luxury villas on Rarotonga and then, along with several wealthy friends, slid into bankruptcy in the late 1980’s, is looking for a new local Cook Island partner or two. Having just bankrupted his original Cook Islands partner, the man is actively on the search for someone new on the beach here in Rarotonga.
The contracting out option
One of the recommendations to come out Audit Office’s review of the management functions, operational outputs and systems at the Ministry of Works, is that certain services be “contracted out” to the private sector (P 46 of the “Special Review Report” tabled in Parliament last session).
Cook Islands to feature on TVNZ
A small crew from the TVNZ Breakfast show are currently on the island with assistance in conjunction with Cook Islands Tourism. Sarah Bristow, a reporter and producer with the show based in Auckland along with a cameraman and Tourism Corporation staff member for NZ, Lena Wong are in the Cook Islands from 30 April – 4 May. Breakfast will be covering three stories which will be aired between 7.30am-9am on TV1 and will focus on romance, family holidays and local characters.

Candles in the wind, is how this group of ski and snowball instructors describe their lifestyle, as they flicker between seasons and Continents. Consisting of kiwis from the South Island the instructors chose Rarotonga as a stop over destination on their way to winter in New Zealand from the United States.
Airport commercial spaces the other side of the story
The coffee kiosk operation has been under audit office scrutiny as outlined in the latest audit report tabled in the April session of Parliament. In order to have some balance, CI Herald has had a closer look at the report and to highlight details giving the ‘other side of the story’. The report indicates that the Airport Authority advertised the availability of 3 commercial spaces at the terminal and these were publicly advertised in October 2006.
Aitutaki wedding for Helen Henry and Prof John Hay
The nuptials for Prof John Hay and his bride, Helen Henry was a very special occasion for their family and friends. Their wedding day was on Saturday 12 April with the ceremony held at sunset on the beach at the Tamanu resort in Amuri followed by a reception held in the resort’s new beach restaurant. The location had extra special meaning for the bride because Tamanu is owned by Helen’s sons, Stuart and Mike and their family.
Yacht rally to visit Suwarrow

A major issue is that the yacht race organizers have not given notice, official or unofficial, of their intention to add the island to their scheduled port of call, let alone ask permission to do so. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has come under a roasting for overspending their budget by $120,282 in the financial years ended 30 June 2006 in the latest Audit Office report released on 11 April 2008. In the year ended 30 June 2005, the operating deficit was even higher with overspending to the tune of $137,155.

It is not known if there were any Cook Islanders among the British, Australian and NZ soldiers who landed at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915 or who came as part of reinforcements during the eight month campaign. “That is the big unknown.” Says Henry Wichman, former President of the Cook Islands RSA. Past member of the CIRSA Executive, Gordon Sawtell agrees. According to Wichman and Sawtell, if there were any Cook Islanders at Gallipoli, they would most likely have joined from NZ. 11,600 New Zealanders served on Gallipoli. Of those, 2,721 died and 4,752 were wounded.

Family gathers for unveiling ceremony
The Rowell family along with friends arrived en mass on Rarotonga last week. The gathering of the clan was to celebrate several milestones within the family. A 20th wedding anniversary was celebrated along with the unveiling of their parents Sophie and Ray’s headstones and a young member of the family got married. Their eldest brother Kevin resides here in Rarotonga and the rest of the family traveled from Australia and New Zealand for the celebrations.

The new Pu Tapere for Muri is Keta Williams as voted at a community meeting held on Wednesday night at the Ngatangiia club house. There were reportedly around 32 people at the gathering with Keta being a popular choice. Atatoa Herman was also mooted but turned down the nomination saying he wants to share the responsibilities and work load with other people in the village.
