Creditable performance by local lifters
Cook Islands weightlifters Sirla Pera and Luisa Peters recently took part in the 2010 ZKC E mail International Club Tournament weightlifting competition organized by the Oceania Weightlifting Federation (OWF) which ended on 30 June.
Sirla finished 18th in his group while Peters finished 20th. It was a creditable performance by both lifters considering their age and stage of development.
The pair represented their training base the Iron Centre in Atupa. They were among 722 competitors from 107 clubs world -wide who took part. In all, 482 men and 240 women took part. It was a record number of entries.
Each club scores points and the winning club in the men’s section was from Cuba while in the women’s section the winning club was from PNG.
Fiji entered the most competitors, in all, 61.
18 year old Sirla, who is tall for a weightlifter, competed in the 94 kg class and finished 18th of the 56 lifters with a total lift of 233 kg. The winner from Cuba who was six years older, lifted a total of 380kg.
17 year old Peters competed in the 75 plus kg class and finished 20th out of the 39 lifters with a total lift of 140 kg. The winner from Nigeria who was older and had a heavier body weight, lifted a total of 255kg.
