New Commission role vital,
says Demo Leader
The Commerce Commission will play a vital role in tackling trade issues such as egg distribution, says Democratic Party Leader Robert Wigmore.
“The egg debate is likely to be the first issue on the agenda,” says Wigmore.
While the issue appears straightforward – whether local egg production is protected through an import levy or not – the role of the Commission will have a significant impact on the broader development of the business sector.
“On the one hand, you have a case for import levy protection as a trade-off for import substitution that benefits the country,” says Wigmore.
“On the other hand, you have a case for cheap imported eggs that benefits consumers and helps to lower the cost of living.”
The Democratic Party Leader confirmed there will be a definite policy so producers like John Scott and retailers like CITC know for certain where they stand and can make their own investment or business decisions accordingly.
“That’s where the Commerce Commission will come in to shape that policy. The faster we can get the Commission established like it has been in New Zealand and Australia, the quicker the Cook Islands will have a fairer trading environment that will work to everyone’s benefit, businesses and consumers included. And that’s got to be good for the country,” adds Wigmore.
