Fiji Peoples Charter promotes an end to the coup culture

In light of recent expulsions of diplomats in Fiji, Australia and New Zealand and Bainimarama seemingly prolonging the duration of the coup, the Times is taking a look at the “Fiji Peoples Charter for Change, Peace and Progress”
It may seem ironic, but the Charter which was issued on 15 December 2008 and promoted by Prime Minister Bainimarama, actually states 14 key principles for ending the coup culture (See extract).
The Charter seeks to establish for Fiji, the foundation for the common good based on shared values, vision and principles and sets out 11 key principles for rebuilding Fiji (See extract)
The principles for ending the coup culture are found under Pillar No 1, Ensuring Sustainable Democracy and Good and Just Governance
As to the reasons why Bainimarama staged a coup, the Times has acquired a copy of a statement issued by Bainimarama on 5 December 2006. The statement sets out some of the key reasons the Fijian Military took action (See copy).
For its part, the Cook Islands government has not stated any view concerning the principles in the Charter but has focused, in line with the Forum nations, on an early return to democratic rule.
