Rutaki Primary School induct their new Prefects
The ceremony to induct four Prefects was held on Friday morning under the shade of the flamboyant tree in the grounds of Rutaki Primary School.
Teachers and pupils watched as their new Prefects, Rosie Tamariki, Julie Pirangi-Tamaau, Marama Miri and Tamarua Marsters were inducted into their new positions.
The children were chosen for their sterling qualities and were praised as potential leaders of the future. John Teaoa from Education said the Prefects will act as arataki Tauturu and as role models to the other children at school.
He told the gathering that the Prefect system began with the British tradition of having older children helping to look after the younger children and the tradition continues up to now.
Other VIP guests at the induction were Hon Tom Marsters and his lawyer wife, Tuaine, Papa Orometua John Andrew, Kaimarama Mataiapo and PTA chairman Glassie Utia. Tuaine Marsters was asked to make the presentation of the certificates to the Prefects who also received their name badges at the ceremony.
School principal, Mrs Nooroa Ingaua was delighted to welcome the VIP guests to the ceremony in honour of the new Prefects which is the first official function Rutaki has held for 2010 school year.
John Teao from the Ministry of Education attended on behalf of the Secretary, Sharon Paio who was attending a similar ceremony at another school.
