Girl Guides celebrate World Thinking Day
Trainers from the Girl Guide Organization held a one day training workshop on the Duke of Edinburgh Award Programme by Executive members Tepaeru Kokaua-Hagai & Ngara Katuke in Mangaia.
The workshop was held at the Oneroa CICC Ekalesia Hall in Oneroa on Saturday 22nd February 2009.
This was introduction training for the parents, leaders and supporters, and especially the girls who are willing to join or participate on this programme. Over 15 people turned up.
There are 2 girls registered on this programme and the hope is to get another 3 for the Mangaia girl Guides.
The age for joining is 14 – 25 years old.
Last year 40 girls completed their Bronze level and 3 the Silver.
Our theme for this training is called “ MAKING YOUR OWN CHOICE “ and based on the daily reading for Saturday 21st February Genesis 13: 1-9
We also attended thei World Thinking Day event which was held Sunday evening at 7.30pm. The function started with the normal Devotion with a strong message from their Papa Orometua of being involved in the Guiding movement.
Sunday 22nd February is a special day for all members of the Girl Guides around the world. This is the birthday of the person who founded the organization in 1910 – Lord Robert Stephenson Baden Powell,
This day was created for all guiding members to remember other sister guides in the organization around the world.
All funding raised goes to the World Office to help or to support any guiding initiative such as the poor homes, orphanage children or any planned programme for each year and so forth. This year’s theme for the World thinking Day – fighting for diseases…… however the girls in Mangaia did a special item…. Modeling/Fashion Show – Miss India, Miss Japan, Miss New Zealand, Miss Philippines, Miss Cook Islands – all these countries are part of our Asia Pacific Region which Cook islands is part of the 27 members to make this Asia Pacific Region. The girls did a Cook island dance as their finale for the night. Our donation was over $ 120.00 which was brought back to Rarotonga by the Trainers.
In the Cook Islands each girl guide company can make an special programme for this event and all their donations will be forward to our General Treasurer Vaine Arioka or any Executive member and this will be forwarded to England to the girl guide headquarters for these projects.
We contributed a beautiful chocolate cake for the members to enjoy this celebration. The girl guides of Mangaia nominated some people to light, blow and cut this special cake, which celebrates 99 years of World thinking Day. See picture
We are very grateful to participate in this event in Mangaia and also during the Sunday morning and afternoon we witnessed an unusual Teretere Tanetini event for men’s only. It was our first time to see this and it was good. The Tamarua CICC Ekalesia young and old men came over to Oneroa and they do the same to move to another church. This is similar to our Youth service. We were asked to join up with their Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner feast.
