Takitumu Lagoon Day will show what you can do to help
If you are looking for solutions to keeping our lagoon beautiful and clean then the Takitumu Lagoon day events are for you.
Events and exhibits on the day are to show you about the solutions and the causes of the problems and offer some solutions for you to use in your own home or garden.
Lagoon trips and a walk along the foreshore
Marine Resources and the Environment Service have a big day planned for Lagoon Day with a combination of fun and education on their agenda.
The star attraction is the free lagoon trips for school children from Enua Manea (Beach Cargo) in Tikioki to the Paringaru stream in Muri, after which the children and teacher will disembark and walk back along the beach.
The NES staff will be waiting for them somewhere near the Fruits of Rarotonga and show the students how to protect the foreshore and side effects of inappropriate measures.
Plant bananas around your septic tank
Did you know that if you grew banana trees around your septic system, the trees would soak up a lot of the excess nutrients coming out of your sewage system?
My father’s generation certainly knew of this because I notice that our homes have banana trees planted on or near our septic tanks, but then again he knew about agriculture with his own plantations and gardens. This information has been given new life with scientists backing this concept of planting banana trees around your septic tank/soak pit or trench.
As explained by one of the sanitation specialists in the Takitumu lagoon management plan, on a daily basis, every person generates 200 litres of wastewater (shower and toilet) which is the equivalent of a 44 gallon drum each! Problem is the overflow is full of phosphates and nitrates which are fertilizers and have that effect on the lagoon and can cause algal blooms.
The purpose of the banana trees is that they need vast amounts of nutrients and they will soak up the wastewater before they reach the lagoon which in the Cook Islands, are only a short distances from where we live to the streams or lagoon.
The average septic tank has a capacity of 3,000 litres of wastewater, and you had a household of mum and dad, two children and a grandparent or two, you begin to understand that your tank will begin to overflow into the ground.
Why not come along to Takitumu Lagoon Day and see the display in the garden showing the septic tank and the banana trees and hear the experts explain how you can do your little bit to help keep our lagoon beautiful and clean for now and into the future for our children.
The Takitumu Lagoon Day programme for schoolchildren starts at 8am and has been planned with the schools direct.
However, invited guests and community members are asked to arrive by 8.30am for the officially opening ceremony on Friday 6 June at Enua Manea (Beach Cargo) beginning at 8.45am.
