Fast ferry to Aitutaki planned
Alternative passenger service for Aitutaki

Soon there may be an alternative way to travel to Aitutaki.
A local businessman announced on Thursday that plans were well advanced for building a fast ferry capable of transporting up to around 50 passengers and their luggage from Rarotonga to Aitutaki.
Final plans are in preparation but an artist’s concept was completed last year. (See diagrams).
At just over 27m long and 11m wide, the twin hulled, diesel engine powered vessel will be capable of speeds up to just over 20 knots and in fine conditions could reach Aitutaki in just 7-8 hours. Two large sails would assist with speed and conserving fuel.
The vessel will have three decks. Passengers and crew on the top deck, sleeping bunks on the middle deck and cargo on the bottom deck. The vessel will have its own hiab crane for loading and unloading cargo.
The businessman said that the cost of construction which is estimated at around $1 million is not an issue and that expressions of interest have already been received from a number of local and overseas investors.
Passengers will travel to Aitutaki in comfort. Seating resembles aircraft seating.
The vessel will offer travelers a competitive priced alternative means of travel to and from Aitutaki and the ability to carry more luggage.
The potential frequency of trips will mean a sizable quantity of fresh produce and manufactured goods can be transited within a short space of time to Rarotonga or Aitutaki for sale.
The businessman said more details on this venture will be released as developments unfold.
