Aere ra, Krystina

Our reigning Miss Cook Islands, Krystina Kauvai, will be leaving our shores tomorrow to further her academic studies in Auckland. Crowned Miss Cook Islands in 2006, Krystina’s initial 2year reign has come and gone with numerous challenges, much excitement, many rewards, and countless lifetime memories. Being crowned Miss South Pacific in the same year, 2006, was no doubt the greatest highlight.
Early this year Krystina made a personal decision that once the expected 2008 Miss Cook Islands Pageant was completed she would move on and focus on achieving other personal goals in life. Furthering her studies is one of them. However last month decisions were made to postpone the pageant to 2009 giving Krystina the unprecedented opportunity to hold on to the title for a third year. Krystina is grateful to MCIPA for the chance to go overseas and further her education while still holding the title of Miss Cook Islands. With MCIPA’s full support and encouragement Krystina hopes that in taking this step potential contestants for future Miss Cook Islands Pageants will have an even more positive view of the pageant without the hesitation that two years is a long time to put one’s life on hold. But rather to consider with a more positive outlook the opportunities that are possible. Development is not limited to the areas of public speaking, gaining personal confidence and learning public and personal etiquette and grooming skills, but also that the prospect to grow academically as well by continuing to pursue overseas studies is a very real possibility.
Although Krystina will be miles away in Auckland, burning the midnight oil flicking through pages of “have to read” text books, we will have her words of student wisdom grace the pages of our newspaper every two months. She has been given the opportunity to fill us all in on student life in the big city. So keep a look out for Krystina’s public column.
Krystina will not be gone for too long. Once this academic year is over in November she will return to spend the festive season with family and friends, and during the end of year break she will continue any duties required of her as Miss Cook Islands.
Miss Cook Islands’s flight leaves in less than 24hrs. The excitement of flatting is growing, the anticipation of finally becoming independent is building and the exhilaration of beginning a new challenge is setting in.
Before the 777 flight takes off tomorrow afternoon Krystina wishes to take this opportunity to extend to our contestant for this year’s Miss South Pacific Pageant, Anne Herman, all the very best of luck.
And also, to once again, say “Meitaki ranuinui” to her family, friends and the people of the Cook Islands for the tremendous and never ending support she has continued to receive during each year of her reign. Before she leaves the warm sunshine and golden shores of home her departing words to you all ..….”You my eyes may not see, but You my heart will never forget. Thank you.”
