New ring coming, Oceania next month

Local boxers will soon be able to contest bouts in a proper-sized international ring, Cook Islands Amateur Boxing Association (CIABA) President Adi Narayan announced.
The ring is being provided following a request to the world boxing body AIBA and should arrive in six months, said Narayan. The ring alone is costing the AIBA US$10,000 and this includes shipping costs. AIBA is also providing a computerised scoring machine.
The current ring is an old one with a wooden platform and steel posts. It weighs one tonne and takes a whole day to transport by truck and erect. Some vital parts for bracing the corner posts are also missing. The new ring will be lightweight, easy to transport and erect.
Narayan said the Cook Islands is to feature in an upcoming issue of the AIBA’s magazine which is printed every two months and circulated around the world.
Narayan reminds clubs that the Oceania Boxing Championships will be held in Samoa from 23-28 April and that on 20 March there will be a contest at the Banana Court. This will be a final trial to select the team for the Oceania event.
Those selected will go into a training camp two days later so National Coach Tevita Vakalalabure will have three weeks to prepare the team. Narayan asks all clubs and officials to attend a special meeting on Tuesday 13 March at CISNOC at 4.30pm.
