Tuesday will be trial for Oceania

Former middleweight Champion,
Vengi Hagai.... will be getting a
much needed boxing match.

The next boxing contest to be held at the Banana Court, on Tuesday 20 March, is shaping up to be a humdinger. It will act as a trial to select a team for the Oceania Boxing Championships in Samoa in April.
Some 20 boxers from the Puaikura, Pue and Avatiu/Nikao clubs registered last Wednesday for the contest.
Cook Islands Amateur Boxing Association (CIABA) President Narayan reports that the contest has been dubbed “Tuesday Nite Fights.”
MATCH
At last, it appears that national rep and former Cook Islands middleweight champion Vengi Hagai will get a much needed match. This will come as great news to Hagai fans.
Both Puaikura and Avatiu/Nikao clubs confirm they now have boxers in the light-heavyweight category who are willing to go up against the much feared, hard hitting Hagai.
Puaikura club also has a promising welterweight and a middleweight to go against the confident Marcus Jack, from Avatiu, and Ray Roumano, the hard hitting middleweight from Pue. In the heavyweight category, Compose Yingonge will have his hands full with an up and coming young heavyweight from Puaikura.
Narayan asks all boxers to report to the CISNOC office on Monday 19 March 4.30pm for weigh-in and medical check.
Boxing fans are assured of an entertaining night of boxing. Entry is $5 per adult and $2 for children under 12 years. There are a limited number of ringside seats for $10.
A panel of six selectors has been appointed to select the squad of 4 boxers for the Oceania Boxing Championship. The selectors are: Sir Pupuke Robati, Papa Fenua, Ben Mose, Papa Robati Junior, Tutai Williams and the National Coach Tevita Vakalalabure. The National Coach has suggested that CIABA should look at the talent and place them into “Possible” and “Probable” categories.
The squad is expected to into training camp as from Monday 26th March for 3 weeks.
In other news, Narayan told the Times that a progress report has been received from Auckland on Eddie Daniel’s training and preparation for the South Pacific Games in Samoa in August.
Coach Lolo Junior Heimuli says “Eddy is a real pleasure to work with. I am sure you will be very impressed with his training journal and goal setting sheet which I will send you next week”. This e-mail message was sent to CIABA Executive Director Paul Lynch.
Narayan confirmed that Vengi Hagai will be heading for Auckland to join Daniel towards the end of this month.
