Maori Training Workshop aim to improve Maori literacy level for Secondary Schools
On the 27th to the 30th of this month, secondary school teachers will undergo a National Certificate for Education Achievement (NCEA) Maori training workshop at the Crown Beach Resort. All secondary schools within the Southern Group islands will attend.
This will be facilitated by the Secondary school Maori Language Advisor, Henrica Wilson-Marona and School Review Officers, Tere Utanga and Andrea Panther.
The overall intention of the training is to strengthen and up skill NCEA teachers to develop quality teaching and learning programmes within their schools. The workshop will also support teachers in understanding best practice in assessment and moderation so that they can form their own professional critiquing forum
At the end of the workshop teachers would be able to establish a good working relationship with NCEA personnel with an understanding of individual roles. Teachers can support one another for inter-school moderation before submitting work to NCEA moderator. Teachers will have a greater understanding of the standards, their intentions and requirements. The new assessment tasks and schedules developed and sections that have been reviewed in the old ones. Effective ways teachers can plan, teaching the curriculum and linking to the NCEA standards for assessment.
The workshop will include activities and resources to be used in the classroom to support teaching effective Maori programme.
This is the first time a training workshop has been planned for Maori Language teachers for Secondary school teachers.
This training initiative aligns closely with the Education Master Plan (EMP) on the need to Improve Maori literacy at all levels of education.
