A passion for the animals

Anyone who knows Moeroa Upu knows that she is passionate about animals, so much so that she has often put the welfare of animals before her work and family commitments. This passion, love and concern she has for animals is what drives her in her job. Moeroa who has returned home after living for several years in Australia is responsible for manning the SPCA hut. While in Australia she was a staunch supporter and long time member of the Australian RSPCA and Wildlife Society.
Established as a way of raising funds for the organisation the hut sells donated goods as well as serving as the Cook Islands SPCA office. An excellent ambassador for the SPCA Moeroa takes the time to explain to people who call in what their future plans are and how the money donated will be spent.
“I do tell people especially the tourists who are very generous with their donations about our plans to build the animal scatuary in Vaimaanga and a lot of them think it’s a great idea and they are keen to assist in any way they can,” said Moeroa.
She said that people who own animals should be responsible and care for them properly and if they don’t want an animal not to just dump it but to ask for assistance, “If a person can’t look after an animal then they shouldn’t have one.”
Moeroa would like to thank everyone who has donated goods to sell but would like to remind donors that only good quality items should be given.
“A lot of the items we get are good quality, especially the clothes but we also receive things that are ripped or stained these we can’t sell. So while we appreciate them and thank you very much could you please sort through the things first before you give them to us as we don’t have anywhere to dispose of them ” said Moeroa.
The SPCA hut is open from Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm and on Saturday until 12 and if anyone needs assistance with their animals or has any enquires call Moeroa as she is only too happy to help
