Rutaki invests new Tiotekai Mataiapo
Fourty four year old Glassie Matata will now be called by his new traditional title Tiotekai Mataiapo, a title formerly held by his late father Utia Matata for many years. Although he’s the youngest of 10 siblings the decision by the family was unanimous to choose Glassie Matata as their new traditional leader. Matata was invested with the Tiotekai Mataiapo title on the 22nd of June 2010 at his residence in Rutaki. Tiotekai Mataiapo is one of the 7 Mataiapos of Rutaki, Puaikura. The Ceremony followed Cook Islands Maori Protocol by dressing Matata in traditional costume given to him by the 6 Mataiapo’s of Rutaki assisted by Matata’s siblings. The costume comprised of the tatua(belt) which was tightened around his waist by Neinei Mataiapo, the ruru(cloak) by Kaimarama Mataiapo, the pare(hat) by Taoro Mataiapo, the korare(spear) by Pota Mataiapo and the most important part of the investiture which was the biting of the pig’s ear. This sealed the commitment made by the new Mataiapo and declared him the new Mataiapo or traditional leader of his tribe.
The final blessing was conducted by CICC ministers Reverend Lelei Patia, Reverend Nooana and Reverend Moutaiki Ngametua.
The day’s event was attended by Tinomana Ruta Ariki, representatives from Te Koutu Nui and Te Are Ariki, Te Kauariki Rangi of Puaikura and invited guests and families.
Kia Manuia kia Tiotekai Mataiapo ou o te nga Mataiapo Tokoitu o Rutaki.
