The Public Service Commissioner will be briefing the Prime Minister about the recommendations for the jobs of Island Secretary on Mauke and Penrhyn. This week, the Pitt Media Group was told that the front runner for Mauke is Steve Barrett, and that the top pick for Penrhyn has been identified as Flora Woonton-Tai.
Woonton-Tai is a qualified teacher and served as Principal of Omoka School. Meanwhile, Barrett is a former aid official with the Aid Management Division of the Finance Ministry. He has been serving as Acting Island Secretary on Mauke since last year when he took over from Tai Tura, who ran successfully in the November General Election.
The Public Service Commissioner is now required to send these recommendations to the Prime Minister and Cabinet – and is expected to do so by way of a submission, next week. The cabinet is formally required to respond to the recommendations and advise the Commissioner on whether it accepts a proposed candidate. Due to the different stages of this formal process, there is not likely to be any public confirmations over the appointments until contracts have been agreed upon.
