Flaming ball passes overhead

The sighting of a meteorite in the early hours of Friday morning shocked a number of local fishermen off Avarua Harbour. One of the men, Nooroa Tupa, described the sighting as a flaming ball – which passed over his head in the night sky. At first, he thought it may have been a plane in trouble but realized the object did not have flashing lights. The ball of fire was seen passing over the island traveling toward the Muri side of Rarotonga. Tupa said it was a scary experience. The Met Office said today that it had received at least four calls about the sighting but there was no official release from a scientific source.
It is also possible that the object may have been a piece of space junk, perhaps an old satellite burning up on reentry into the earth’s atmosphere.
