Football-Head on FIFA duties


The head of Cook Islands Football Association President, Lee Harmon is currently overseas in Colombia officiating at the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
Harmon has been a member of the FIFA Youth U-20 World Cup Organizing Committee for several years now, and is based in the capital city of Bogota as a match commissioner.
The FIFA U-20 World Cup which is held every two years is spread throughout Colombia in 8 different cities and stadiums.
The FIFA website reports that well over a million tickets has been sold by the local organizing committee and FIFA to the general public.
New Zealand is the sole representative of Oceania Football Confederation at this prestigious event, and has drawn two of their group matches, one all against African powerhouse Cameroon and the tough South American’s Uruguay.
The Young All Whites play their final group match against Portugal today Friday 5th August. A win will almost guarantee the Young All Whites a spot in the knock out stages of the tournament.
The tournament which started last week will wrap up with the finals on Saturday 20th August 2011.
“2014 World Cup draw revealed”
The pathway to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in BrazilTM has been laid out at a Preliminary Draw ceremony in Rio de Janeiro last Saturday 30th July 2011 which was viewed by over one hundred million viewers around the globe.
Oceania Football general secretary Tai Nicholas attended the Preliminary Draw on behalf of the Confederation.
The Preliminary Draw outlined the qualifying paths for Europe (EUFA), North and Central America (CONCACAF), Africa (CAF), Asia (AFC), South America (CONMEBOL) and the smallest Confederation Oceania (OFC).
The Oceania Football Confederations pathway is as follows with stage one including member associations American Samoa, Cook Islands, Samoa and Tonga to contest in the stage one tournament to be played in Samoa from 21-26 November 2011.
The winner of stage one will join Vanuatu, New Caledonia and Tahiti in Group A for the 2012 Oceania Nations Cup. Group B will consist of Fiji, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea and of course favorites New Zealand in the second stage. These eight teams will play in a tournament in Fiji from 1-12 June 2012 with the four highest-placed teams progressing through to stage three.
At the stage three level teams will be drawn into a round robin format on a home and away basis with the winner booking their spot to play in the inter-continental play offs against the fourth placed team from CONCACAF.
The winner of this playoff will then qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
