Worker claims 2009 Mini Games unpaid wages total $7,000
At last week’s Cook Islands Party (CIP) conference, the issue of unpaid monies to workers for work done for PMG Ltd, during the 2009 Pacific Mini Games, was raised.
On Friday morning one of those persons claiming to be owed monies spoke to the Times about the delays and frustration at their claims not being settled by the Games Company, PMG Ltd which was headed by PM Office Chief of Staff Mr Mac Mokoroa.
The person showed the Times documents which indicate a total of $7,000 owed to three subcontractors who carried out technical work. He said the main contractor had been paid $5,000 but even that was not the full amount. He said the matter of non -payment was raised at the CIP conference.
The documents show the invoices as approved for payment by Sonny Williams, Operations Manager, PMG Ltd.
The person told the Times the initial budget approved by Williams was now being disputed by Mokoroa.
This matter was put to Mr Mokoroa at the PM’s Office on Friday morning for comment and at the time of going to print, no response had been received.
Prime Minister Puna to visit NZ
Prime Minister John Key today announced that Hon Henry Puna, Prime Minister of the Cook Islands, will arrive in New Zealand on Sunday for a three-day visit.
“I look forward to meeting Mr Puna on Monday,” says Mr Key. “The Cook Islands and New Zealand share the closest of ties, with Cook Islanders also holding New Zealand citizenship, and it is a relationship we value highly.
“Ahead of next month’s Pacific Islands Forum, Mr Puna and I will be discussing a range of issues of mutual interest, including economic development and tourism links to the Cook Islands.”
Mr Puna’s first official meeting with Mr Key in February was postponed due the Canterbury earthquake.
“Cook Islanders, like so many of our Pacific neighbours, have been extremely generous in fundraising for the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal, and I will be expressing my thanks to Mr Puna for this help,” says Mr Key.
Mr Puna will also meet Ministers Gerry Brownlee, David Carter, Murray McCully, Hekia Parata and Craig Foss.
He departs New Zealand on Tuesday.
