Uirangi to attend Miss South Pacific Pageant
On Wednesday afternoon, Uirangi Bishop received a phone call from the Miss Cook Islands Association President Clee Marsters advising her of her nomination as the Cook Islands representative at this year’s Miss South Pacific pageant in Samoa.
Her nomination comes due to the Miss Cook Islands pageant being postponed till April next year.
Uirangi entered the Miss Cook Islands pageant two years ago and came 2nd runner up behind Miss South Pacific of 2010 Joanna Meyers.
“When I was told by Clee over the phone yesterday at work that I would be representing the Cook Islands at the Miss South Pacific, I just didn’t know how to reply, I was so shocked and still am, but I feel very honoured to have this opportunity to represent the Cook Islands at the Miss South Pacific 2011 in Samoa,” said Uirangi.
Born and raised in Aitutaki, Uirangi, the Cook Islands dance champion, feels very proud to have her family and the whole of Aitutaki backing her up for the December event.
“The Miss Cook Islands team which consists of myself, the President of the Miss Cook Islands Association and Georgina Williams, will team up with Uirangi’s own team to come up with ideas and construction regarding Uirangi’s talent, traditional costume and her frame of mind. The small team will be in Samoa for the competition which will start on the 4th of December to the 9th” and there will also be a team of Cook Islanders based in Samoa which will be on hand if we need them,” said Clee,” Uirangi looks forward to going up a step from the Miss Cook Island competition to the Miss South Pacific. “
“I can’t wait to see what my team will prepare for me, my talent act, and my traditional costume, I simply can’t wait to get there,” said Uirangi.
“When I told my mum and my sister they just couldn’t believe me, they kept saying that they never thought that this would happen, but they are very happy and overwhelmed,” said Uirangi.
The Miss Cook Islands Association will be holding a fundraising event for Uirangi on the 27th of August which will also feature the Laughing Samoans.
