Health Minister attending more overseas meetings
Minister for Health Hon Nandi Glassie announced on Thursday that he is off overseas again in September and October. In September he and Secretary for Health Tupou Faireka will be attending a high level meeting at the UN in New York on NCDs-Non Communicable Diseases prevention and control.
It is a meeting of global leaders from 19-20 September to set a new international agenda on NCDs (cancer, diabetes, chronic lung diseases and cardiovascular disease). It will be just the second time in its history that the UN General Assembly will meet on a health issue (the last issue was AIDS).
The meeting will focus on developmental and other challenges and social and economic impacts, particularly for developing countries.
A data base of NCDs in the Cook Islands is being prepared for the meeting. Glassie said he will not be attending the meeting in Brazil. In October, Glassie will be attending the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) Western Pacific region meeting in Manila where there will be discussions on the WHO budget for next year.
Each year NCDs kill 9 million people under the age of 60yrs. Around 63% of all deaths (3 in 5 people) attributed to an NCD.
