Pacific Heads of Education meet in Fiji
Secretary of Education, Sharyn Paio was funded by the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat to participate in a meeting of Pacific Heads of Education from 13-16 March in Nadi, Fiji. With the exception of two countries there was full representation by Heads of Education of all Forum Countries
There were two parts to this meeting – the first part involved identifying and seeking solutions to address issues pertaining to the management of educational information amongst Forum Member Countries. Mrs Paio felt reassured that the Cook Islands Ministry of Education is definitely living its vision of “…being recognised as leaders in education throughout the region” with numerous countries impressed at the Monitoring and Evaluation Framework we have developed and are using. It was obvious that most countries are good at collecting data but then don’t always use it to improve practice and, in education, that means introducing strategies to address areas of identified weakness.
The second part of the meeting involved reviewing the format and setting the agenda for the Forum Education Ministers’ Meeting which is scheduled to be held from 14-17 May 2012 in Vanuatu. The theme for FEdMM this year will be “Sustainable Quality Education – 2012 and beyond”. The aim is to make this meeting more interactive for Ministers. Although unconfirmed, it is now expected that the agenda will contain increased opportunities for Ministers to discuss issues and share educational ideas. Of particular interest will be the announcement of what the direction of Australia and New Zealand for support to the education sector in the Pacific will be.
In addition to the discussions on FEdMM, the Pacific Heads of Education also discussed the TVET mapping study and regional framework; professional standards for Principals and Head Teachers; Benchmarking education quality for results (PaBER); Climate change and Disaster Risk Management; Education Priorities under the Pacific Plan; Early Childhood Education; Monitoring and Evaluation of the Pacific Education Development Framework.
