Banners bring a level of professionalism to Markets
Promotional banners for market vendors were handed over from the Business Trade and Investment Board (BTIB), and Hon Minister Brown to representatives from the various day and night markets on Thursday morning. The number of markets outside of the Punanga Nui market, has increased with individual Vakas and villages using them as a means to encourage local production. BTIB has produced two separate banners to differentiate between existing morning markets and the increasingly popular night markets. Receiving their signs were representatives from the Empire, Akaoa and Takitumu night markets and the Takuvaine day market. Minister Brown commented that the promotional banners will add a level of professionalism to the markets and “was a great start to get something going as we lead into the Leaders Forum in August and Constitution celebrations of July.”-Maria Tanner

The name of a Defence Force sailor killed in a scooter accident in Rarotonga has been released.
He was 22-year-old Able Seaman Combat Specialist, William Paratini Delamere.
The Defence Force said he was involved in a motor scooter accident next to where the HMNZS Otago was moored.
Delamere was on leave at the time and personnel from the ship were the first to the scene.
He was taken to Rarotonga Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 1.30am Cook Island time (11.30pm New Zealand time).
An investigation into the event is being conducted by local police.
“This is a sad day and, on behalf of the entire New Zealand Defence Force, especially the Navy, I extend my deepest sympathies to the family, colleagues and friends of William,” Maritime Component Commander Commodore John Martin said.
The HMNZS Otago is currently in the Pacific conducting maritime patrols.
The Defence Force said it has notified the immediate families of all sailors involved and is providing them with assistance.

Cook Islander coaches interstate rugby Champions

Coached by New Zealand born Cook Islander Eric Tom, the State of Victoria took home the U20 Interstate Rugby Tournament. Congratulations to the 4 Moorabbin representatives that travelled to the Inaugural Interstate Rugby Union Carnival during Queen’s Birthday weekend with the VIC U20 team. The inaugural U20 Interstate Rugby Union Carnival was held at Palm Beach Currumbin over the weekend. Invitational teams from New South Wales, Northern Territory, South Australia and Victoria joined two Queensland Country teams for the three-day event held over the Queen’s Birthday weekend. The carnival began on Saturday 9 June and was supported by Queensland Rugby. Moorabbin’s representatives were Jordan Schmidt, Noa Noa, Jordan Fowles and Ryan Keleher. Eric (pictured with the Champion Cup is the son of Eric Tom of Aitutaki and Mata Tou Rani of Mitiaro and he is also a senior coach with the Boorondara Kiwi Hawthorn Rugby Club based in Victoria. It’s good to see our own kids making an impact on the Australian Rugby circuit and hoping one day that Eric himself will find time to come home and help with our local rugby development programme.

Facebook addiction

If you are one of the billions of people in the world who have a Facebook account, you will know exactly how addictive Facebook can be!
There has actually been a complete study on the ‘Addiction of Facebook’ and it turns out that people can get just as addicted to Facebook as alcoholics are with alcohol. It also shows that women have a higher risk of being addicted to Facebook because of their tendency to talk too much. (They said it in a much more professional way, but you get what I mean)
Believe it or not, Facebook addiction is actually quite serious, and there is even a test that tells you whether you’re an addict on not.
Apparently, if you spend a lot of time thinking about Facebook and become restless or troubled if you can’t use it, you’re addicted. If you use Facebook to forget about personal problems, or if you tried to cut down but failed, or if you use it too much that it has a negative impact on your job or studies, yes, you’re addicted!
An easy way to tell if you’re addicted is if you look back a few weeks, and think about how much of your day/night was spent on Facebook, also those simple in your face signs where people tell you that you’re ‘always online’ usually helps in figuring out whether you’re addicted or not.
And if you’ve come to the realization that you are a Facebook Addict, there is a step-to-step guide on how to defeat your addiction! (Insane!)
A recent study claims that for some people, quitting Facebook is more difficult than smoking or giving up alcohol, and also that the majourity of Facebook addicts are teenagers. (Not hard to believe)
So my advice here is to be CAREFUL! You don’t want to end up like a ghost who has never touched grass because they were sitting inside all day on Facebook! Be the person who insanely runs around outside, kick a soccer ball around with your little brother or sister, climb a tree, pick some flowers I don’t know. Just do something that doesn’t involve sitting around using up hours of what could have been an awesome energetic time! I know, it’s fine to use Facebook, I mean I use Facebook all the time too, just don’t let it rule your life! I just try to use Facebook to keep in touch with friends and family overseas.
I know, Facebook can be awesome for certain reasons, but like a lot of other things, Facebook has its cons, and it’s always good to have a break from the famous widespread social networking site that Facebook is.
So log off, and take yourself away from the computer. Go outside, get some fresh air or if you’re one of those people who stay up late scrolling through pointless status updates about what everyone had for dinner, jump off and get some rest.
Remember, you only live once! -Dante Numa
