Opening of Te Raurau o te Kaingavai public-private partnership
Friday 24th August - Hon Mark Brown and Nandi Glassie along with New Zealand Deputy Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Ms Amanda Ellis, will officiate at the opening of a public-private sector partnership between the between Cook Islands Aquafarm and Cook Islands Government, through the Ministry of Marine Resources – under the name Te Raurau o te Kaingavai – the Green Living Water Gardens.
The vision is to transform Te Raurau o te Kaingavai into an eco-friendly sustainable garden, nursery and aquaponics epicentre of learning to generate awareness on sustainable green technologies and practices. Also, to create a living space for both the community and visitors to experience and study the ecosystem by being a part of it and in harmony with nature and the environment.
Ministry of Marine Resources Secretary Ben Ponia says that the opening is really an acknowledgment of the fruition of the efforts of the two women leaseholders behind the project, Ms Lynnsay Rongokea and Ms Barbara Thomson who took over the 5,756 m2 property located in Titikaveka Village.
Next Wednesday during the week of Forum Leaders Meeting the New Zealand Minister for Foreign Affairs will open the NZAid funded Aquaponics Pilot Project that is housed at the facility and where aquaponics expert Dr Wilson Lennard has being based for the past three months.
