Tumultuous welcome for Secretary of State Clinton
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her delegation landed at Rarotonga International Airport around 10.30pm on Thursday to a tumultuous welcome from local politicians, dignitaries, dancers and members of the public.
On setting foot on Cook Islands soil for the first time, she was presented with an ei by Miss Cook Islands Teuria Napa and welcomed by Prime Minister Hon Henry Puna and his wife Akaiti. Also on hand were DPM Hon Tom Marsters and his wife Tuaine and Minister Teina Bishop.
Immediately at ease, Clinton quickly dispensed with her security team, waving them aside in order to mix and mingle with the friendly crowd.
Dancers performed and Minister Bishop joined in on several ocassions, giving Clinton an impromptu display of his prowess as a dancer.
Prime Minister Puna was clearly overwhelmed by the occasion but Clinton was loving every moment of it, smiling, waving and talking to the crowd that thronged around her.
It was a moment she will surely remember for a long time.
