Marine compliance officers upskill
The Ministry of Marine Resources (MMR) team took to the waters yesterday in a simulated intervention inspection of a local fishers as part of the compliance training workshop staff are currently attending.
The workshop, which commenced on Monday, drew to a close on Friday morning as New Zealand Ministry of Primary Industries, Pacific Islands Fisheries Compliance Advisor, Pete Southen conducted the 5 day training series for MMR staff.
MMR staff partook in both theoretical and practical segments of the training to reinforce their confidence and techniques to better handle intervention inspections.
The simulated environment was an exemplary exercise for MMR staff to practice skills needed during investigatory situations of fishing vessels and their crew.
Southen, on his third visit to the Cook Islands, says that while the Raui legislation is nearing its completion stages, the fisheries officer’s role in the Pacific is a huge job comprising of both advisory and compliance roles, the workshop helps to build techniques in ways that they might approach that.
