Airport upgrade part of big spend on island
By Charles Pitt

Infrastructure projects earmarked for Aitutaki are estimated to cost $29.1 million over 20 years. Out of the total of $237.5 million for all projects, the Aitutaki component represents 12.3% of the total cost.
$13 million is earmarked for improving the airport for international operations.
The capital costs, that is, the cost of construction and building, are expected to be met by various aid donors and lenders such as the Asian Development Bank.
As to the ongoing operational and maintenance (O&M) costs (see chart below) the “Preventative Infrastructure Master Plan” document states the O&M costs for each project will need to be added to government’s expenditure budget.
The O&M costs of state owned enterprises (e.g. Power, Ports) are not included on the assumption these costs will be incorporated into those businesses’ operating plans.
