Police shift goal posts in crash case George

“We are not going to tolerate the Police shifting the goal posts!” defence lawyer Norman George told the criminal court on Thursday morning.
Before JP Tangi Taoro, Police prosecutor Inspector Patia brought a charge of careless driving against a man who had crashed a car.
George argued that the crash actually occurred on a private property and the Police charge related to the main road.
Patia said the careless driving occurred on the main road first and when the man drove onto a private property to do a “u” turn, the crash occurred. George submitted the Police were trying to shift the goal posts.
George told the court that unless the Police had an independent witness, his client would plead not guilty. Patia said the Police had a witness.
George said his client was ready to go to a defended hearing anyway. The man was also charged with driving without a licence and George said he would plead guilty to that charge.
JP Tangi Taoro adjourned the careless driving charge to 1 March 2007 for a defended hearing and also adjourned sentencing on the other charge until then.
