Tuesday contest all go
Adi Narayan, President of the Cook Islands Amateur Boxing Association (CIABA), confirmed on Friday that there will be six bouts on the card at the contest at the Banana Court on Tuesday evening.
The contest starts at 7pm and boxers from Pue, Avatiu and Piri’s Gym at Puaikura will take part. Bouts will feature light middleweights, middleweights, light heavyweights and heavyweights.
Narayan said an added attraction would be an open challenge for the women’s arm wrestling prize of $100 cash donated by the Association President.
Admission to the contest is $5 for adults and $2 for children under 12 years.
Auckland training for boxers
Narayan reports that local boxer Eddie Daniel has started training with Cameron Scott’s Gym in Auckland and arrangements are being made for Vengi Hagai to join Daniel by next month. Scott is the current New Zealand Heavyweight champion.
Hagai, who trains at Pue Gym, reported on Friday he is making good and steady progress towards achieving his desired weight of 75kg. He told the Times he has shed 12kg already and is now 81kg. He has just 5kg to lose.

International body grants US$10,000
Narayan has just returned from Taipei, Taiwan, where he attended the executive meeting of amateur boxing’s world body AIBA. Papa Jim Little, who is on the Executive Council of AIBA, also attended.
As Chairman of the AIBA’s Finance Commission, Narayan presented the AIBA’s business plans, budget and financial regulations to the 31-member council. His reports were well received.
Narayan reported that provision was made in the AIBA budget for allocations to purchase equipment and that Oceania members would receive their US$5,000 grants by April. This is good news for our local Association which also received a grant of US$5,000 last month through Papa Jim Little.
That grant had been held up for four years by the Australian association.
