DENGUE: Do’s and don’ts

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS OF DENGUE FEVER
- Abrupt onset of high fever
- Severe frontal headache
- Pain behind the eyes which worsens with eye movement
- Muscle and joint pains
- Loss of sense of taste and appetite
- Measles-like rash over chest and upper limbs

CURES?
- Prevention is better than cure
- No drug or vaccine is available for the treatment of dengue
- The control of Aedes Aegypti mosquito is the only method of choice

TREATMENT
- Persons with dengue fever should rest and drink plenty of fluids.
- They should be kept away from mosquitoes for the protection of others.
- Paracetomol, or Panadol, can be used to help with the headache and aches and pains in the body.
- Aspirin and Brufen should be avoided.

DO’S AND DON’TS
- Regularly change water from storage containers
- Remove all rubbish that water lies in such as tins, tyres, plastics, coconut shells etc
- Clear tree holes and the many other places where
rainwater collects or is stored.
- Use mosquito repellent sprays, creams, liquids, coils etc.
- Do not wear clothes that expose arms and legs
- Children should not be allowed to play in shorts and half sleeved clothes
- Use mosquito repellents while sleeping during
day time
