A gift fit for a King

Expert tivaevae sewer from Avatiu, Mama Parau Taruia, displays the work of art she has created, which will be the national gift to the new King of Tonga, on 1 August. The Prime Minister’s executive staff commissioned Mama Parau to sew the ‘king-sized’ tivaevae – a finely embroidered depiction of orchids – for the coronation gift, next month. The gift will be presented by Jim Marurai, on behalf of the Cook Islands. Two delegations are heading to Tonga on 28 July – the Prime Minister and the Queen’s Representative will both be in the Kingdom for the occasion, which is expected to attract huge numbers of dignitaries and well-wishers.
