Warning for local pirates

A crackdown on video piracy in Fiji has served as a warning to local businesses, which are renting and selling illegal DVDs. It may only be a matter of time when the Cook Islands feels the same pressure to curtail piracy.
Film producers claim they lose millions of dollars through the selling and renting of pirated movies and TV programmes. In the Cook Islands, that concern continues to be ignored as top names are illegally bought and sold, cheaply.
Local businesses like Nikao Beach Video, Tumeke Movies, Movie Planet, and Tuki’s all conduct thriving businesses with copied product – either off the internet or from cheap markets in Asia. The Fiji source may now dry up thanks to the recent crackdown there with heavy police raids.
It is quite noticeable in Suva now that all the top outlets that once sold pirated DVDs have since shut down their operations.
Fiji Television is currently running an anti-piracy campaign to promote the new attitude.
Observers in the Cook Islands believe that the pressure has come from outside Fiji.
