From Teen Scene, To the Big Scene
By Feona Mo’ardi Good

Bernard Tairea .
started with Radio
Cook Islands.

Bernard Tairea returned to Rarotonga to report on the 2006 snap general elections – and he has come a long way since he first began broadcasting from here.
He was back broadcasting live for the Auckland-based Niu FM network.
Tairea, now 30 and known to many as just “Bernard”, first started with Radio Cook Islands at 11 on Teen Scene Radio.
He finished school at Tereora and set his sights on becoming a radio announcer.
His dream came true when he scored a radio-broadcasting job with Niu FM in Auckland and he was contracted to work as the Cook Islands producer.
ONLINE
Tairea now works on Monday evenings from 8pm until 5am on Radio Niu FM, which can be accessed via streamline on www.NiuFm.
Having a passion for music, he also manages a music store in Mangere town centre in Auckland. He said that keeps him well entertained.
In March of every year, you will find Tairea busy helping to coordinate the Cook Islands village in the Pasifika Festival at Western Springs Stadium, Auckland.
Apart from this, he is one of the hosts at Club Raro in Papatoetoe, south of Auckland.
PEOPLE
Tairea strives to be a “people’s person”. He found it very easy when he was home to visit all the villages on Rarotonga talking with people about how they felt during the elections.
He has just taken up a new hobby, which is fashion designing. When he finds spare time he designs clothes for all occasions.
But he never forgets when he comes from.
Tairea said: “Home is always where the heart is.”
Coming home to cover the elections was a great honour, he said.
