But first an introduction.
Tuari Maui Dawson, a visitor to Rarotonga, is the current World Invitational Full Contact Karate Champion. The competition is held every two years in Japan and this is the second time that the New Zealand rep has held the title.
Tuari’s Cook Islands connection is through his great grandmother Vaine Monga, who married a New Zealand Maori and lived in Ahipara, north of Auckland.
A 5th Dan Black Belt, the 32-year-old is on his second trip to the Cook Islands and he said that he has come back home to learn from Shihan Dan Turua.
Tuari, who was a student at a Dojo in Okinawa, Japan, for two years, said that Shihan Dan is an excellent example of a Master as he not only takes care of his community but he also works with young people. And that the school here is as good as anything that he has seen overseas.
MISSION
“I am also on another mission and that is to look for a wife,” Tuari said with a smile.
“I am 6ft 3in tall, don’t smoke or drink, can clean and cook and sing.
“The only thing is I don’t have much money.”
A talented young man he has worked for New Zealand Maori Television and is a host on the programme Sugar Shack screened on TV3. He also does social welfare work in South Auckland and sings in his spare time.
MARAE
Tuari - who participated in our recent constitutional celebrations with the NZ Maori performing group Passitively Radical - said the highlight of the trip was a visit to the Ngati More Marae.
Describing the experience as truly awesome he said it was a great honour to be welcomed by the More clan.
While in Rarotonga Tauri is being hosted by John and Gaye Whitta and their family.
He also describes them as being awesome and said that he plans to be around for a while.
“As long as it takes me to find that special woman.”
