Kwai arrives on maiden voyage

The cargo vessel, “Kwai” arrived in Rarotonga from Honolulu, Hawaii on Thursday on its maiden voyage to the Cook Islands.
Its Captain, Brad Ives has had 40 years experience in cargo transportation.
The plan is to visit the Cook Islands every two to three months from Honolulu, calling at Penrhyn, Manihiki, Pukapuka, Aitutaki and Rarotonga. Other ports to be included are Christmas Island and Fanning Island and also Kiribas. This maiden voyage has taken 24 days because of a six day stopover at Christmas Island.
The vessel utilises three sails as a measure to save fuel. Distance is such that without the 50% fuel saving achieved by using the sails, it would be uneconomic to make the voyage to the Cook Islands. They don’t have enough fuel to make the round trip without sails.
Ives said the plan is to add further sails and also cabins for eight what he describes as “adventure travellers.” The sails plus the fare paying adventurers will help make the trip economic.
